29/04/2010 Introduction to Insulin Pump Therapy : A study day for professionals

CSII (Continuous Subcutaneous Insulin Infusion) is an alternative to traditional insulin injection therapy where the insulin is injected subcutaneously as part of a basal-bolus regimen. The amended NICE guidelines of 2008 expect that this therapy could apply to between 2% and 15% of the Type 1 population. The SIGN guidelines recommend that CSII be considered in patients with Type 1 diabetes who are unable to achieve their glycaemic targets and in those who experience recurring episodes of hypoglycaemia. CSII is increasingly becoming more common and health care professionals from all sectors of acute care will be more likely to come across patients on this therapy. This study day is for Consultants, SpRs, nurses, dietitians and other health care professionals who see people with diabetes in their work or who have an interest in diabetes.

This year’s Diabetes in Scotland conference comes at a new time of year with an exciting slant on crucial new developments in national level guidance for diabetes. At the conference several new reports will be launched which will influence the provision of care in Scotland for people with diabetes for the medium term. The revised SIGN guideline on the management of diabetes will be launched, along with accompanying patient version and quick reference guide. This updates SIGN 55 published in 2001 and presents new evidence and recommendations for the management of different challenges and complications for people with diabetes. The Scottish Diabetes Action plan will be launched at the end of 2009 and will be refreshed at the conference with key themes drawn out for discussion. The results of the 2008 Scottish Diabetes Survey will be launched showing the changing face of diabetes in Scotland and the latest data on service provision and patient outcomes. There will also be a report from the Scottish Diabetes Research Network with information on ongoing clinical studies and opportunities for participation and engagement with the Scottish research community.

A series of guided workshops will explore practical methods for making the guidance in the Action Plan and SIGN guideline a reality in your daily practice with other sessions focusing on patient involvement and professional development. On top of this there will be an extensive poster exhibition with prizes awarded in several categories related to implementation of knowledge intro practice. The conference will feature plenary lectures from the Chief Medical Officer, Dr Harry Burns and Andrew Morris, Professor of Diabetic Medicine at the University of Dundee.

Once again there will be a Scientific Symposium presenting findings of recent research and looking ahead to new developments on the horizon of diabetes care. This will take place on the afternoon of Monday 22 March at the Edinburgh Conference Centre, Herriot Watt University, Edinburgh and registration is free to those who have registered for the main conference.
